The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has reportedly recovered suspected wiretapping devices from the Abuja residence of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, claiming the equipment could intercept private conversations and access sensitive security documents

Court filings by the anti-graft agency indicate the items were seized during a search conducted at El-Rufai’s home in the presence of his wife, Hadiza El-Rufai, and his son, Mohammed Bello.

The commission also alleged that the former governor refused to cooperate with investigators, remaining silent until he is formally arraigned in court. Additionally, ICPC claimed that one of El-Rufai’s aides linked to the probe has fled the country.

The details were disclosed in legal documents submitted to the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, where El-Rufai is seeking redress, challenging what he described as unlawful detention and violations of his fundamental human rights.

According to the ICPC, a Magistrate Court in Bwari, FCT, issued a 14-day detention order for the former governor while investigations continue. The order is set to expire on Thursday.

Dismissing claims of arbitrary detention and political persecution, the commission asked the High Court to reject El-Rufai’s application.

The ICPC further stated that El-Rufai faces multiple corruption-related questions, including the alleged disappearance of €1.4 million, 180 suspicious payments totaling N2,158,799,199 from Kaduna State’s internally generated revenue (IGR) account, and transfers amounting to N428,122,180.18 to undisclosed accounts, among other allegations.
