UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has introduced new immigration policies requiring all visa applicants, including skilled workers and dependents, to demonstrate higher English language proficiency

The goal is to promote integration and employment opportunities while making settlement in the UK more merit-based.
Critics argue that the stricter rules may unfairly impact non-native English speakers and create barriers for migrants.
The reforms also include requiring skilled worker visa applicants to hold an undergraduate degree and extending language requirements to adult dependents for the first time.
Starmer defended the changes, stating that speaking English is “common sense” for those living in the UK.
He wrote: “If you want to live in the UK, you should speak English. That’s common sense.
So we’re raising English language requirements across every main immigration route.”
