Former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar says his political ambition is not driven by desperation to occupy Aso Rock but by a commitment to reposition Nigeria for greatness.
Speaking on Saturday in Lagos through Prof. Ola Olateju of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State, at a reception organised by the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for defectors from the PDP and Labour Party, Atiku emphasized that his move to the ADC was about building a new Nigeria, not personal gain.

“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria. So, it’s not about him being president at all costs. It’s about having a government that can deliver for Nigerians. ADC, to us, is not just a party but a movement,” Olateju said on his behalf.
The Adamawa-born politician, who recently left the PDP with key allies to join the ADC, said the party offers Nigerians a fresh start anchored on good governance and collective sacrifice amid the harsh effects of subsidy removal, inflation, and insecurity.
He assured that the ADC presidential ticket for 2027 would not be imposed on anyone but decided through a free and transparent process. “Whoever emerges will represent the collective voice and aspiration of Nigerians. The point is not Atiku for president at all costs, not Obi for president at all costs. It is about a better Nigeria,” he added.
The reception saw prominent PDP figures defect to the ADC, including Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu, former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle, Lagos Central Vice Chairman, and ex-PDP Youth Leader Tai Benedict.
They were formally welcomed by ADC leaders such as National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State Chairman George Ashiru.
Atiku called on Nigerians to rise above partisan politics and rally behind a coalition that puts national interest ahead of personal ambition.
