Khelif’s victory was met with a standing ovation from the crowd, waving Algerian flags in support.
She expressed gratitude to her team, coach, and supporters, saying, “I’m very happy. For eight years, this has been my dream, and I’m now the Olympic champion and gold medalist.”
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended Khelif’s participation, emphasizing that she meets the criteria to compete as a woman. IOC President Thomas Bach stated, “These two are women, and they have the right to participate in the women’s competition.”
Khelif’s win marks a significant moment in her career, overcoming adversity and controversy to achieve her dream.
She urged people to “uphold the Olympic principles” and refrain from bullying athletes, highlighting the impact it can have on their well-being.
