The office of the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed claims linking Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN) to a social media account on X, describing the development as a coordinated attempt to spread falsehood

INEC made it clear that the chairman does not operate any account on the platform, stressing that the profile being circulated online is fake and part of a smear campaign aimed at damaging his reputation.

The controversial account had suggested that Amupitan endorsed a politically biased post, a claim the commission firmly rejected as baseless and entirely fabricated.

In a statement issued by Adedayo Oketola, the commission emphasized that the chairman has never participated in partisan discussions or shown support for any political group, either publicly or privately.

“To clarify, the INEC Chairman does not possess or manage any personal account on X. He has never engaged in partisan commentary, nor has he ever aligned himself with any political bias or activity in either his private or public roles.”

INEC further described the viral post as a deliberate move to undermine the credibility and neutrality of its leadership, especially at a time when the commission is focused on electoral reforms and preparations for upcoming elections.

The statement also revealed that cybercriminals have been impersonating the chairman through fake social media profiles to mislead Nigerians, noting that several of such accounts have already been flagged and reported to security agencies.

“This latest fabrication is simply a continuation of a criminal trend aimed at exploiting the Commission’s reputation for unlawful purposes.”

INEC warned that it will not tolerate attempts to tarnish its leadership, adding that it is working with security agencies and cyber-intelligence units to identify and prosecute those behind the impersonation and spread of misinformation.
