The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially notified Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, about a petition from her constituents seeking her recall from the National Assembly

In a letter signed by Ruth Oriaran Anthony, Secretary to the Commission, INEC confirmed receiving the petition along with updated contact details of the petitioners.
“Pursuant to Section 69 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999, as amended, I write to notify you of the receipt of a petition from representatives of registered voters in your constituency seeking your recall from the Senate,” the letter stated.
It added that the notification aligns with Clause 2(a) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall 2024. Copies of the letter were also sent to the Senate presiding officer and published on the commission’s website.
In a follow-up statement on Wednesday, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, announced that the commission would now begin scrutinizing the list of signatories.
“The next step is to scrutinize the list of signatories submitted by the petitioners to ascertain that the petition is signed by more than one half (over 50%) of the registered voters in the constituency. This will be done in the coming days,” Olumekun said.
He assured that the verification process would be conducted transparently, and the outcome would determine INEC’s next steps.
The recall petition comes amid a series of controversies involving Akpoti-Uduaghan, including her recent suspension from the Senate. She was suspended for six months over a heated altercation with Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding seating arrangements in the chamber.
The senator also accused Akpabio of sexually harassing her, an allegation that has fueled political tensions.
The petitioners seeking her removal have cited allegations of “gross misconduct, abuse of office, and deceitful behavior.” However, Akpoti-Uduaghan has denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the recall move as a “coordinated suppression” of her voice.
