The Independent National Electoral Commission has officially recognised the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Nyesom Wike, marking a key development in the party’s protracted leadership crisis
INEC updated the PDP leadership on its official website, listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as National Chairman. He was elected alongside other NWC members at a national convention held on Sunday at the velodrome of Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The recognition comes amid a deep split within the PDP. The rival faction, led by Kabiru Turaki, had approached the Supreme Court to prevent the Wike-backed group from holding the convention. Despite the legal challenge, the convention went ahead, producing a full roster of new national officers.
Speaking at the convention, Wike said the party had successfully resolved a leadership crisis that once threatened its stability, praising loyal members for reclaiming the party’s structure and restoring internal democracy.
He added that party members resisted attempts to deepen ethnic and regional divisions, declaring that the PDP had been “returned to its rightful owners — the people.” Wike also lauded grassroots supporters for their resilience, noting that the rank-and-file remained committed despite “the infidelity of opportunistic elite.”
