Tensions in the Middle East have erupted into open confrontation as Iran confirmed it launched a large-scale ballistic missile attack on Israel, striking what it called “dozens of military centres and airbases” across the country
The assault, dubbed Operation True Promise 3 by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), represents one of the most direct and significant military offensives between the two rivals in years.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported waves of rocket barrages targeting central Israel, including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with interceptors and explosions lighting up the night sky. Air raid sirens rang out as civilians rushed to shelters amid the chaos.
The BBC reported widespread panic in major cities, with at least five people injured in the Tel Aviv area, according to Magen David Adom, Israel’s national emergency service. One person was moderately hurt, while four others suffered minor shrapnel injuries. Emergency crews were deployed to at least seven impact zones across the Dan Bloc region.
While Iran has yet to detail the full scope of the operation, the IRGC promised further briefings. Iranian state media also claimed two Israeli jets were shot down over Iranian airspace, a claim that remains unverified.
The attack followed a stark warning from Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who vowed to deliver “heavy blows” in retaliation for what Tehran described as Israeli acts of aggression and war.
Israel confirmed the continued threat, with the IDF stating: “The shooting continues. Another barrage of dozens of rockets was launched toward Israel.”
Reuters images showed blinding flashes and booming detonations across Jerusalem, with residents describing scenes akin to open warfare.
With the situation rapidly deteriorating, fears are growing of a wider regional conflict. Calls for international diplomatic intervention are already mounting as world powers watch developments with deep concern.
