Iran’s state media has officially announced the de.ath of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking a dramatic turning point for the country and the wider Middle East.
The announcement was made early Sunday, shortly after US President Donald Trump disclosed the development, saying it presented Iranians with their “greatest chance” to “take back” their country.”
According to Iranian reports, the 86-year-old leader was k!lled in an airstrike that struck his residential compound in central Tehran. Satellite imagery released by Airbus reportedly showed heavy destruction at the site following the bombardment.
State television described Khamenei as a figure who “consistently stood among the people and at the forefront of his responsibilities, confronting what officials call global arrogance.”
The strike came amid coordinated military operations launched on Saturday by the United States and Israel, targeting strategic locations across Iran.
In response, Iranian forces carried out retaliatory attacks against Israeli territory and US military bases within the region, raising fears of a wider regional confrontation.
Reporting by the BBC indicated that the Israel Defence Forces said its strikes in Tehran focused on sites where senior political and security officials were believed to be assembled.
