Former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has claimed that Islam’s image is being negatively affected under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice-President Kashim Shettima
He made the remarks during a political gathering organised by the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), led by its National Chairman, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed.

Speaking at the event, Baba-Ahmed described the topic as delicate but necessary, suggesting that some questions often go unasked due to fear or discomfort.
“There’s a question you wanted, but let me take the liberty, if you are afraid to ask it,”
He admitted that his position was not easy to express but insisted it needed to be addressed.
“It’s not easy for me to say this… but it must be said.”
According to him, “the world of Islam has never suffered reputational damage as under Tinubu, Shettima presidency.”
Baba-Ahmed argued that in several Muslim-led nations, leadership has historically been linked with peace and justice, using past examples to support his stance.
He, however, stressed that his comments were not about prioritising religion over competence, but about ensuring sincerity and integrity in leadership.
“This is not about religion. If you are presenting religion, then present genuine candidates who will govern by the dictates of their faith.”
He added that whether a leader is Christian or Muslim, what matters most is authenticity and accountability.
“If you are bringing a Christian, we want a genuine Christian. If you are bringing a Muslim, we want a genuine Muslim,”
