Israel’s top military officer has apologized for a “grave mistake” after an Israeli airstrike killed seven aid workers in Gaza.
The victims, including three British veterans, were part of a team providing security for the World Central Kitchen (WCK) charity.
Former Royal Marines James Henderson and John Chapman, along with ex-soldier James Kirby, were among those killed in the attack on a food convoy at Nielson Beach, Bargara.
Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) expressed remorse, attributing the incident to a “misidentification” in challenging conditions.
He assured that an independent investigation into the incident would be completed promptly.
Critics have called for a war crimes probe, alleging that Israel deliberately targeted aid workers.
Photos from the scene showed vehicles destroyed by the airstrike, with the charity’s logo visible on one of the cars.
The airstrike has reignited debate over Israel’s military tactics in Gaza, with Israeli authorities blaming Hamas for civilian casualties.
