A live broadcast on Iranian state television was abruptly cut off on Monday after an airstrike hits the studio, forcing the anchor to flee as smoke and debris filled the set
The screen quickly went dark.
The explosion was reportedly caused by an Israeli airstrike targeting the IRIB state media building in Tehran, signaling an escalation in Israel’s military campaign inside Iran. Until now, Israel had maintained that its strikes were focused solely on Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure.
In a significant shift, Israel has issued evacuation orders for several civilian-populated areas in Tehran, including the neighborhood housing the state broadcaster. These areas are home to hundreds of thousands of residents, raising concerns about the feasibility of a rapid evacuation and the potential for mass civilian casualties.
Since Friday, Israeli strikes have reportedly killed around 250 people in Iran, according to Iran’s health ministry. In retaliation, Iranian missile attacks have killed 24 people in Israel, with one strike hitting the Haifa oil refinery on Monday.
The ongoing exchange marks one of the most dangerous escalations between the two countries in years, with fears growing that the conflict could spiral further out of control.
