Football legend Franco Baresi, widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in history, has d!ed at the age of 66, bringing an end to the life of one of AC Milan’s most iconic figures
AC Milan confirmed his passing on Friday, paying tribute to the club legend, who spent his entire professional career with the Rossoneri and later served as the club’s honorary vice-president.
Baresi represented AC Milan for 20 years, captaining the team for 15 seasons and helping the club win six Serie A titles and three European crowns. In recognition of his remarkable loyalty and achievements, Milan permanently retired his famous No. 6 jersey after his retirement in 1997, making him the first player in the club’s history to receive that honour.
On the international stage, Baresi was part of Italy’s 1982 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and later captained the Azzurri to the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil. Despite returning just weeks after knee surgery to play the entire final, Italy lost on penalties.
Throughout his career, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy and became renowned for transforming the sweeper role with his intelligence, composure and ability to build attacks from the back. Alongside Paolo Maldini, Alessandro Costacurta and Mauro Tassotti, he led the legendary Milan defence that inspired the club’s famous 58-match unbeaten run in Serie A during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
