It's not compulsory we approve all Tinubu’s nominees - Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reiterated that not all ministerial nominees sent by President Bola Tinubu are guaranteed confirmation by the Senate, stressing that the screening process is guided strictly by parliamentary procedures and not automatic approval

Akpabio made the remark during plenary while responding to concerns that some nominees complain after appearing before the upper chamber without being confirmed. He emphasized that appearing for screening does not translate to automatic acceptance.

He explained that nominees are subject to scrutiny, and even after presenting themselves before the Senate, they can still be rejected if they do not meet the required standards.

“Your appearance here does not mean that you have been confirmed. Because some people are blaming me all over that they came to the Senate for screening and they were not confirmed. It’s not compulsory that we confirm you. We have our own procedures. So you can come here and finish all the grammar and you leave, and we find out that it’s a comma and then we don’t confirm you,” he said.

He further stressed that the Senate operates on collective decision-making, noting that lawmakers are free to support or reject nominees based on merit and assessment during screening.

Akpabio also reminded nominees that even procedural confidence or expectations expressed during screening do not guarantee approval, as final confirmation depends on the Senate’s resolution.

At the end of the session, he allowed lawmakers to proceed with further questioning, putting it to a voice vote before ruling that the “ayes have it,” and directing that questioning continue.
