Not everyone believes helping family should come without limits, and former football star Jay-Jay Okocha says he made that clear long ago.
He explained that he once gathered his relatives for a family meeting to talk about the financial support he was giving them. According to him, he wanted everyone to understand that any money he provided to start or grow a business was expected to be used well.
“I once called a family meeting and told my relatives that the money I give them for business must not fail .
I even bought houses for them first, so at least they will not be homeless. That way, when I retire, nobody will disturb me”, he said.
For Okocha, it wasn’t just about giving money. He said making sure his relatives already had homes meant they wouldn’t have to worry about shelter, while the business support was meant to help them become financially independent.
His goal, he explained, was to put things in place early so everyone could stand on their own and he could eventually enjoy his retirement without constant financial requests.
