John McClain, a longtime music executive and producer known for shaping some of the industry’s biggest careers, has di.ed at 71.
His representative confirmed that he died Tuesday in Malibu. People familiar with the situation said McClain had faced health challenges for several years, although no official cause of de.ath has been disclosed.
Over the years, McClain worked closely with major artists such as MICHAEL JACKSON, Janet Jackson, Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. He later became co-executor of Michael Jackson’s estate alongside John Branca after the pop icon’s death in 2009.
Under their leadership, the estate grew into a hugely successful business operation, backing projects including the “Michael” biopic, a Broadway production, a Cirque du Soleil show and the documentary film “This Is It.”
McClain also left a strong mark during his time at A&M Records, where he helped develop Janet Jackson’s landmark album “Control.” He was also known for spotting new talent and encouraging the label to sign acts like Marky Mark & The Funky Bunch.
