Adebayo Adedamola has been declared the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate for the 2026 Osun State election
Adedamola secured 919 out of 957 votes cast during the party’s primary held on Tuesday in Osogbo, the state capital. The primary chairman, Humphrey Abba, announced the results, noting that 20 votes were void. “One of the aspirants withdrew.
The candidate that got the remaining votes is Adebayo Adedamola with 919 votes and stands elected and returned,” he said.
Despite his earlier resignation from the party, Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke’s name appeared on the ballot. Sunday Solarin, Secretary of the primary committee, said Adeleke and Adedamola were the two aspirants, but votes cast for Adeleke would “eventually amount to waste,” urging delegates to follow voting instructions.
Voting began shortly after delegate accreditation at 11:35 a.m., with INEC representatives and a PDP committee led by Humphrey Abba present. Security was tight, with officers from the DSS, police, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps stationed at the venue.
Adeleke had formally resigned from the PDP on November 4, 2025, citing crises in the party’s national leadership. His resignation letter, addressed to PDP Ward 2 Chairman Sagba Abogunde, expressed gratitude for opportunities to serve as senator and governor under the party. The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed his resignation.
Osun PDP Chairman Sunday Bisi had previously said the party’s internal crises made it impossible to hold the governorship primary as initially scheduled for December 2. INEC’s timetable allows parties to submit their candidates’ names for the August 8, 2026 election until December 15, leaving room for changes if the party’s issues are resolved.
