In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos and Ogun state governments expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved families. The statement was signed by Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, and Ogun State Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade.

“The governments of Lagos and Ogun states once again commiserate with the families of the two young men, Lateef Ayodele and Cina Gami, who tragically and unfortunately lost their lives in the road accident involving Anthony Joshua. We pray The Almighty grant the repose of their souls whilst granting their families and loved ones the fortitude to bear this very sad and painful loss.”

According to the statement, Joshua was discharged late Tuesday afternoon after doctors confirmed he was clinically stable. It noted that the boxer was “heavy hearted and full of emotions over the loss of his two close friends,” but was considered fit enough to continue his recovery from home.

It was also disclosed that Joshua and his mother visited a funeral home in Lagos the same day to pay their last respects to the deceased, whose bodies were being prepared for repatriation later that evening.

The two state governments also praised the medical team that handled the emergency, saying, “The team of doctors and medical personnel at Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, who attended to Anthony and those that sustained injuries, displayed quality care and professionalism that is truly commendable.”

Governors Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State further appreciated members of the public and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their support and concern following the tragic incident.

The crash reportedly occurred around 11 a.m. on Monday when a Lexus Jeep carrying Joshua, with registration number KRD 850 HN, rammed into a stationary truck on the expressway. Two passengers died, while others, including the boxer, sustained injuries.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing, as authorities have urged the public to remain patient and cooperate while efforts continue to address the aftermath.
