Born in Ilorin, Sheikh Soliu devoted decades to learning, teaching, and religious leadership, becoming one of the most influential Islamic figures in the state. He served as the 12th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate, a role he held for over 40 years after his appointment in 1983.

During his tenure, he earned wide respect for his deep knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence, strong leadership in religious matters, and steadfast commitment to peace, unity, and religious tolerance within the Muslim community and beyond.

Often referred to as Imam Fulani, Sheikh Soliu was appointed by the former Emir of Ilorin, Zuluqarnain Muhammadu Gambari, following the death of Imam Musa Ahmad. His father, Imam Saliu Omo Onida Abdulkadir, had also served as the 7th Chief Imam of the Ilorin Emirate.

Sheikh Soliu’s passing marks the end of a long and influential era in Ilorin’s religious leadership.
