The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have reached a new agreement aimed at enhancing the quality of university education and promoting stability in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions
The accord, which replaces the 2009 pact that had previously triggered multiple strikes over unresolved issues, was signed and unveiled on Wednesday at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Conference Hall in Maitama, Abuja. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad.

ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, expressed cautious optimism about the new deal, noting the union’s history of clashes with the government but hoping for a different outcome this time.
“We are optimistic that the government will implement this agreement in full, though our past experiences make us cautious,” Prof. Piwuna said. “It is our belief that Dr. Tunji Alausa will be different, and that ASUU will not need to issue strike threats before any part of this agreement is honoured. Just as the government has been open and accessible, so is our union.”
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, described the agreement as a historic turning point for Nigeria’s tertiary education system, highlighting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to uninterrupted academic calendars and improved educational standards.
“This is more than the signing of a document; it represents renewed trust, restored confidence, and a decisive turning point in our tertiary education sector,” Alausa said. “It is an unprecedented demonstration of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dedication to quality education and the continuous academic progress of Nigerian students.”
The agreement is expected to set a new foundation for cooperation between the government and ASUU, aiming to prevent future disruptions and ensure that students can pursue their studies without prolonged interruptions.
