Impeachment proceedings have been initiated against the Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, by the Kano State House of Assembly over allegations bordering on gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The move was introduced during plenary by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Lawan Hussaini Dala, who said the action follows the provisions of Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which outlines the process for removing a deputy governor from office.
While presenting the notice before lawmakers, Dala explained that the allegations stem from Gwarzo’s tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024, as well as his current role as deputy governor.
He accused Gwarzo of allegedly diverting funds meant for the administration of the state’s 44 local government councils while supervising the ministry.
According to him, from June 2023 to January 2024, Gwarzo allegedly received ₦1.5 million every month from each of the 44 local government councils. The payments, he said, amounted to ₦66 million monthly and approximately ₦462 million within a seven-month period.
Dala further alleged that additional payments were made between February and July 2024 under the pretext of financing special assignments. During that period, each local government council reportedly paid ₦3.255 million monthly, bringing the total to about ₦726 million across six months.
The majority leader told the Assembly that the alleged transactions represent a serious breach of the trust placed in public office holders and weaken principles of transparency and accountability in governance.
The impeachment notice also lists abuse of office among the accusations levelled against the deputy governor.
