Kano Govt Shuts College Over Alleged Sodomy Cases

    The Kano State Government has ordered the immediate closure
    of boys section of Hassan Ibrahim Gwarzo College, Kano, over recent media
    report of alleged child abuse in the school.
    Deputy Governor of the state, Hafiz Abubakar, announced the
    closure of the college while inaugurating a 14-man committee to investigate the
    matter on Friday.
    Mr. Abubakar, a professor, who expressed government’s
    concern over the ‘’unfortunate’’ report, said that the committee was headed by
    former Vice Chancellor, University of Maiduguri, Prof. Abubakar Mustapha.

    He mandated the committee to carry out a thoroughly
    investigation of the alleged sodomy in the school, especially the perpetrators
    of the act.
    He directed the committee to identify all victims of the
    alleged abuses as well as establish the extent of abuse and levels of
    culpability.
    ‘’It is also expected to investigate knowledge of the school
    management on the cases and establish its culpability or otherwise,’’ he added.
    The deputy governor charged the committee to recommend
    appropriate measures to be taken by the government to guard against future
    occurrence.
    The committee, whose members included legal practitioners,
    civil society organisations, police, Hisba, has two weeks to submit its report.
