The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has suspended three medical personnel at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre following the de.ath of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, after surgical scissors were accidentally left inside her stomach. Umar passed away on January 11, 2026.
Umar underwent a medical procedure at the hospital in September 2025. She later experienced discomfort, and subsequent tests and scans revealed the presence of the surgical scissors in her body.

The incident gained public attention after her brother shared the story online, sparking widespread outrage and calls for accountability.
In response, the Hospital Management Board, through its Public Relations Officer Samira Suleiman, confirmed that a preliminary investigation ordered by Executive Secretary Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda verified that the surgical instrument had been left inside the patient.
The Board announced the immediate suspension of the three staff members directly involved in the procedure and referred the case to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary action in accordance with professional and legal standards.
“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.
