Katsina govt dismisses teacher, suspends principal over student’s death

Katsina State Government has suspended the principal of Government Girls Arabic Senior Secondary School, Fago, Fatima Yakubu, over her negligence that led to the death of a SS2 student, late Fatima Maikano.

Also dismissed and banned for life from premises of all its schools was the mathematics teacher, Abubakar Suleiman, who was privately engaged by the principal to teach in the school.

The state Commissioner of Education, Badamasi Lawal, while briefing newsmen on Tuesday on the outcome of an all-inclusive meeting involving the deceased’s parent said a committee has been set up to further investigate the matter.

He added that the state government has henceforth banned corporal punishment across it schools and warned principals and teachers to ensure that no student is henceforth flogged with cane.

He said the incidence is so unfortunate, adding that government would not fold its arms but ensure the safety of its students who were entrusted to teachers and principals.

Also speaking, the parent of the deceased student, Tasi’u Maikano said the recent action taken by the ministry will go a long way in soothing his pains and that of his family.

Daily Trust recalls that the late Fatima died when she alongside her classmates were flogged by the Maths teacher over their inability to submit an assignment earlier given to them.

Fatima, having fallen sick, was neither provided with medical assistant at the school’s dispensary nor moved to a nearby hospital since she came down with sickness after the flogging.
