Kemi Badenoch, leader of the opposition and head of the Conservative Party, has urged the United Kingdom to support the United States in taking firm military measures against Iran amid escalating tensions in the Middle East
Her comments followed reports that Iran had allegedly targeted British military bases in the region, raising renewed concerns over security and stability.
Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Badenoch stressed that the UK must act decisively to prevent further attacks on its forces and allies. She called for close coordination with international partners and attention to the concerns of regional countries who feel insufficiently supported by Britain.
“We need to do everything we can to stop these attacks from happening,” she said.
Badenoch noted that some regional allies have expressed frustration with the UK’s current approach, warning that waiting until Britain itself is attacked could increase risks. She argued that responding to threats early can help protect British interests and maintain regional stability.
Addressing fears that her stance could escalate into a broader conflict, Badenoch clarified that her goal is not to provoke war but to prevent a prolonged crisis. She added that, in some cases, taking swift action to resolve a threat is the quickest way to ease tensions, rather than remaining passive while the situation deteriorates.
Her remarks come amid rising tensions between Iran and Western allies following recent military exchanges in the Middle East.
