The strike, which started on March 15, is rooted in a 2017 collective bargaining agreement (CBA), with doctors also seeking adequate medical insurance and addressing frequent salary delays.

However, the government, citing financial constraints, has been unable to hire trainee doctors, according to Health Minister Susan Nakhumicha.

The health sector, already underfunded and understaffed, faces routine strikes, with clinical officers joining the current protest.

Despite ongoing talks, no resolution has been reached, with doctors adamant that the strike will continue until their demands are met.

The strike has led to street protests in major cities, reminiscent of a similar 2017 strike lasting three months. During the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors also protested sporadically for lack of personal protective equipment.
