A hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, has dismissed 100 doctors who have been part of a nationwide strike for nearly a month, hospital management announced on Tuesday.Kenyan hospital lays off 100 striking doctors

The Kenyatta University Referral Hospital stated that it has hired new doctors to replace those on strike.

Doctors across Kenya began the strike in mid-March, demanding improved pay and working conditions.

President William Ruto addressed the strike on Sunday, stating that there is insufficient funds to pay the striking doctors. He emphasized the need for financial responsibility, stating that borrowing money to pay salaries is not sustainable.

Despite the president’s remarks, the doctors’ union has remained firm in its demands. On Tuesday, hundreds of doctors protested and submitted a petition to parliament, urging lawmakers to intervene in the labor dispute.

This is not the first time Kenyan doctors have gone on strike due to inadequate pay and working conditions. In 2017, a 100-day strike led to fatalities due to lack of medical care. The strike ended after the doctors’ union reached an agreement with the government to increase salaries.

However, doctors claim that some of the agreements made in 2017 have not been fulfilled.
