A boat belonging to Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) caught fire on Thursday morning at the Ipakodo terminal in Ikorodu

The boat, carrying 19 passengers, was en route to Victoria Island when the incident occurred around 6 am.
In a statement, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that all passengers and crew were safely evacuated.
The authority reported that four passengers sustained injuries and are receiving treatment.
“Upon receiving the distress call, LASWA’s emergency response team swiftly mobilized to the scene, coordinating with LAGFERRY, other boat operators, and first responders to manage the situation,” the statement said.
“We are pleased to report that all passengers and crew on board were safely evacuated, though four passengers suffered minor injuries and are being treated.
“We are conducting thorough preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident, collaborating with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive review.
“Safety remains our highest priority, and we are committed to taking necessary actions to improve fire prevention measures across the Lagos waterways.”
In November 2023, a commercial boat also caught fire at the Ikorodu loading point, caused by an electrical spark during ignition when the captain and deckhand were fueling the engine.
