Lagos bans training and employment of auxiliary nurses

The Lagos State Government has declared it illegal for any health facility to train or employ auxiliary nurses, warning that hospitals found violating the order risk immediate closure

Dr. Abiola Idowu, Permanent Secretary of the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), issued the warning on Thursday during a sensitisation campaign and town hall meeting in Alimosho Local Council.

Represented by the agency’s Director of Research and Statistics, Dr. Olorunfemi Olonire, Idowu said the ban was necessary because auxiliary nurses have done more harm than good to the healthcare system. She stressed that only qualified and licensed medical professionals are allowed to practise in Lagos.

Idowu urged residents to report unlicensed health facilities and quack practitioners to HEFAMAA for prompt enforcement, adding that the state is determined to stop citizens from being misdiagnosed or treated by unqualified personnel.

She revealed that 32 health facilities were shut down between January and June 2025 for various infractions, as part of efforts to ensure that only accredited hospitals operate in the state. Monitoring and inspection teams, she added, have been deployed across all local councils and development areas.

Speaking at the event, the King of Shasha Kingdom, Oba Babatunde Nasiru, appealed to HEFAMAA to also tackle the poor attitude of staff in public hospitals and ensure government-owned facilities are properly equipped and staffed.

The monarch warned that without better service delivery in public hospitals, residents would continue to patronise quacks. He emphasised the importance of HEFAMAA’s monitoring efforts to protect residents from unqualified individuals posing as nurses or doctors.
