Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat has slammed DisCos over a N29m electricity bill that was sent to him
He decried what he called an outrageous surge in his electricity bill, which skyrocketed from N2.7 million in March to a staggering a N29 million in April

Speaking on Monday, April 14, during a roundtable meeting between the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) and the Lagos State Government in Victoria Island, Hamzat expressed deep frustration with the billing practices of electricity distribution companies, commonly known as DisCos.
Hamzat, who represented Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the event organized ahead of a new rural electrification agreement, accused the DisCos of resisting transparency by refusing his request to switch to a prepaid meter—even after he had already purchased one.
“There are billing challenges. In fact, I’m a very good example,” he said. “Last month, in the state house where I live, the bill was ₦2.7 million. This month, Eko DisCo sent us a bill of ₦29 million. I sent it to the commissioner for energy. It’s crazy. I actually bought a meter to stop estimated billing, but converting it has been wahala.”
Hamzat also recounted the experience of a resident in Coker Aguda, Surulere, who was handed an electricity bill of N2.8 million—surpassing his annual rent of N2 million.
“How can the bill be more than the man’s rent for a year? Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” he said.
