Lagos State Government has ordered two bakery employees to perform two weeks of community service after being accused of stealing five loaves of bread from their employer

The Ministry of Justice said on Monday that the sentence was issued through the Restorative Justice Centre in partnership with the Non-Custodial/Community Service Centre as an alternative to formal prosecution.

While the bakery initially sought to take the workers to court, a District Prosecutor reviewed the matter under the Ministry’s new sifting process at the Magistrate Courts and referred both the employees and the employer to the Restorative Justice Centre.

Following mediation, it was agreed that the workers would begin serving two weeks of community service at the Lagos State Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja.

The Ministry described the outcome as part of its ongoing reforms to promote accountability and reconciliation for minor offences.

“This approach demonstrates the Ministry’s commitment to dialogue, accountability, and the effectiveness of restorative justice in resolving minor cases,” the statement added.
