Lai Mohammed, former Minister of Information, has traced the roots of Jollof rice back to Senegal
Speaking on Channels TV on Tuesday, December 23, Mohammed, who served under the Buhari administration, explained that the dish was originally prepared for prisoners. He said the name “Jollof” comes from the Senegalese word “Wollof.”

“When you look at the origin of Jollof, it is actually from the word Wollof from the Senegalese. Jollof Rice was initially a meal for prisoners—everything in one plate, with oil and salt,” he said.
Mohammed added that the association of Jollof with Senegal was later highlighted on Wikipedia, which credited the dish’s origin to the Wollof people.
