The Lagos State government has distanced itself from a campaign advocating for the forced relocation of Igbos from the state and other Southwest states.
An X user, @Lagospedia, had posted on July 27 urging Southwest stakeholders to prepare for the relocation of Igbos from August 20-30.
In response, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Lagos State governor, Gbenga Akosile, released a statement condemning the post as “reckless, divisive, and dangerous.” Akosile affirmed that Lagos remains a home for all Nigerian citizens, regardless of their ethnic background.
He said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu views the post as an attempt to create discord between the Yoruba in the Southwest and other tribes, particularly those who reside permanently in Lagos. Akosile mentioned that security agencies have been urged to investigate and prosecute those behind the campaign.
This development follows a call by former Vice President and 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the Federal Government to arrest and prosecute those advocating for the mass relocation of Igbos. Atiku stated that such rhetoric endangers national peace and security and criticized the silence that followed the divisive social media posts.
Governor Sanwo-Olu appealed to Lagosians to ignore such divisive messages and promised to intensify efforts to ensure lasting peace in the state.
