Academic and non-academic staff of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, will resume work on Wednesday following the suspension of their strike, which began on July 31

The decision to end the industrial action was made on Monday during a congress held on campus by the Joint Action Committee (JAC), an umbrella body comprising the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.
Since the strike started, all university activities have been at a standstill. On August 2, LASU’s Senate suspended the 2024/2025 second-semester examinations, originally scheduled for August 4, along with other academic and administrative duties until further notice.
Several LASU staff confirmed to The PUNCH that the strike has been suspended and work will resume Wednesday. The JAC is expected to release a statement outlining the conditions for suspending the strike.
Prior to this decision, workers had rejected a Lagos State Government offer regarding outstanding salary arrears. On August 7, JAC representatives and university management met with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat and reached an agreement: the government would pay 12 months of the 23-month arrears related to salary increments, with the state covering nine months and LASU management three months, to be paid in instalments between August and December 2025.
However, many staff members rejected the deal at an emergency congress on August 9, demanding full payment of the arrears in five instalments starting August 2025, accusing JAC leaders of agreeing to an inadequate deal without consulting members.
Following the congress, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello appealed to workers to return, noting that while the offer may not meet all expectations, accepting it is part of negotiation realities. She warned that continued strike action could severely affect students, the university community, and LASU’s reputation, highlighting previous management achievements like prompt promotions and salary payments.
The LASU Senate also approved the resumption of all academic and social activities from Wednesday, August 13, and announced that the previously suspended second-semester examinations will now begin on Monday, August 18, 2025.
A statement by LASU’s Centre for Information and Public Relations Coordinator, Thomas-Onashile Oluwayemisi, advised students to return to their hostels across the Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses starting Wednesday, August 13.
The statement read:
“The Senate of Lagos State University, at its meeting held on Monday, August 11, 2025, approved the resumption of academic and social activities effective Wednesday, August 13, 2025. This follows the decision of the Joint Action Committee to suspend its industrial action and resume work after a productive meeting with the Deputy Governor on August 7.
“Students should move into their hostels on all campuses from Wednesday, August 13. The 2024/2025 Second Semester Examinations, previously suspended, will commence on Monday, August 18, 2025.”
