The family of the late Henry Nwosu has begun preparations for his burial following his death on Saturday, March 14, 2026, at the age of 62 after a prolonged illness

Speaking during a visit to the family home in Lagos, Nwosu’s widow, Victoria Nwosu, and his younger sister, Agatha Nwosu, said plans are underway to give the former midfield star a befitting farewell.

They revealed that the family is reaching out to the National Sports Commission and the Nigeria Football Federation for assistance in organising the burial.

Agatha Nwosu, a retired headmistress based in Owerri, noted that several notable figures, including two former Nigerian internationals residing in Owerri, had offered guidance on formally notifying the relevant authorities.

“We have been working quietly to ensure my brother is given a befitting burial, and the family has been meeting regularly,” she said, acknowledging the financial strain caused by his long illness but affirming their commitment to honour his legacy.

She appealed for support from the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, and the NFF. “My brother served this country wholeheartedly. I expect the government and the NFF to ensure he gets a proper burial. We are still waiting and hoping they will respond,” she added.

Victoria Nwosu recounted her husband’s final moments, expressing disappointment over the lack of outreach from the NSC and NFF despite the public tributes from sports authorities. “He had been ill for a long time but showed signs of improvement, and we thought he would recover. We went for a routine check-up, but that was when he passed on. Several former players have visited to sympathise with us, but we have yet to receive any call from the National Sports Commission or the Nigeria Football Federation six days after his death.”

Former Nigeria defenders Tajudeen Disu and Sunny Epochi, who visited the family home, criticised the sports bodies’ inaction. “I am not surprised that neither the NSC nor the NFF has called the family or shown up here since he passed on. I do not expect them to show concern because it is not in their character. They did not show concern when Peter Rufai and other former Nigeria internationals died, and I want them to prove me wrong this time,” one of them said.
