Gospel minister Lawrence Oyor has said the political rise of presidential candidate Peter Obi should be a subject of serious consideration, especially given the level of influence, power and prominence he has attained over the years.
Oyor’s point was not necessarily about whether people support Obi politically or intend to vote for him. Rather, he drew attention to what he described as the remarkable fact that Obi has risen to a significant position in Nigerian politics without, in his view, having serious wrongdoing pinned on him.
He acknowledged that Nigerians have different political preferences and that not everyone may agree with Obi or choose to support his political ambitions. But beyond those differences, Oyor said there is something worth considering about how Obi has managed to build a reputation and reach a level of political influence while avoiding allegations that could be firmly established against him.
Explaining his position, the gospel minister said:
“Whether you want to vote for Peter Obi or not, it should baffle you that he has made it to that level of prosperity and capacity in politics, power and influence, yet you cannot pin anything on him”.
He believes the issue goes beyond political affiliation. His statement focuses on the combination of wealth, political influence and power that comes with rising to such a level, and the fact that, despite that prominence, he believes there is still no clear wrongdoing that can be pinned on Obi.
His comments therefore present Obi’s political journey from a different perspective, asking people to look beyond whether they support his candidacy and consider the record and reputation he has built along the way.
