Lionel Messi, Argentina’s captain has broken the FIFA World Cup all-time scoring record after finding the net against Austria in a Group J clash at the 2026 World Cup in Dallas.
The milestone came in the 38th minute when Messi scored his 17th career World Cup goal, surpassing Germany legend Miroslav Klose, who previously held the record with 16 goals.
The goal officially etched Messi’s name alone at the top of the all-time World Cup scoring charts, marking a historic moment in the tournament’s history and further strengthening his legacy on the global stage.
It was also his fourth goal of the 2026 edition, after earlier scoring a hat-trick in Argentina’s opening 3–0 win over Algeria.
Lionel Messi had nearly reached the record earlier in the match but missed a penalty in the 8th minute, sending his effort wide before eventually converting later in the game to make history.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is competing in what is expected to be his sixth and final World Cup, with Argentina also chasing back-to-back titles after their 2022 triumph over France.
