Liverpool Football Club has officially retired the No. 20 jersey in honor of Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother, Andrea

The announcement came on Friday night, marking a deeply emotional and historic moment for the club. Jota, who joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, left a lasting impact at Anfield, helping the Reds win several trophies, including the Premier League.
Jota and his brother were laid to rest last Saturday. After close consultation with his wife, Rute, and the rest of his family, the club made the unprecedented decision to retire his shirt number across all levels—including the Women’s team and Academy—a first in Liverpool’s history.
Michael Edwards, FSG’s CEO of Football, said via the club’s website:
“It was vitally important to us to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in the decision and to ensure they were the first to know of our intention.”
He added:
“I believe this is the first time in Liverpool Football Club’s history that such an honour has been bestowed upon an individual. Therefore, we can say this is a unique tribute to a uniquely wonderful person.”
“By retiring this squad number, we are making it eternal – and therefore never to be forgotten.”
With this gesture, Liverpool ensures that Diogo Jota’s legacy as their No. 20 will live on forever.
