Liverpool and Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo has appealed for privacy after the heartbreaking loss of his unborn son
The sad news was announced on Saturday by his partner, model Noa van der Bij. The couple had been expecting their second child together, with the baby due in October.

Sharing the news on social media alongside a photo of the couple holding hands over a blanket and a knitted hat, Van der Bij wrote:
“With broken hearts, we share the devastating news that our baby boy passed away during pregnancy.
“Thank you for your love and support. Elijah Raphael Gakpo. Forever loved. Forever our son.”
She later posted a photo of a candle and a cross, recalling what she described as a comforting sign after visiting a church.

“We went to church to light a candle. Afterwards, we walked to the church playground with our son Samuel.
“There was only one other child there. His name was Elijah. There could not have been a more beautiful sign from God. He reminded us that our little boy is never far away.”
Gakpo also released a short statement as the family grieves.
“This is an incredibly difficult time for our family. We kindly ask for our privacy and space. Thank you for your understanding,” he wrote.
The 27-year-old is currently with the Netherlands squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
