The Ekiti State police commissioner, Mr Joseph Eribo, has confirmed the k!lling of a 15-year-old boy mistakenly by his father
The police boss, who gave the information in Ado-Ekiti at a book launch on ‘Modern Security and Safety Practices in Nigeria’, said the sad event happened at Iye Ekiti, in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, the incident occurred on the man’s family farmland, saying preliminary investigation showed that the father, whose name was not disclosed, had taken his son to the farm for routine farm work.
The commissioner said the farmer had been experiencing frequent monkey invasions on his farm and had carried a firearm to ward off the animals.
While on the farm, he reportedly noticed movement in a nearby tree and fired a shot, assuming it was a monkey, but it turned out to be his son, who was on the tree and was hit by the bullet.
The boy was confirmed dead after the shooting.
The father has been taken into custody for further questioning while investigation continues.
