What was meant to be a joyous celebration turned tragic on Saturday as Lagos hotelier, Otunba Kunle Akinyele, suddenly slumped and d!ed during his wife’s 60th birthday thanksgiving service
The incident occurred at Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Iyanu, Odemuyiwa District Headquarters, in the Egbeda area of Lagos, during the ceremony held in honour of his wife, Deaconess Catherine Adejoke Akinyele.
According to witnesses, Akinyele appeared visibly distressed and gestured for assistance—possibly asking for water or an inhaler—just moments before he collapsed. A video circulating online captured him looking agitated and making desperate gestures before falling.
It was gathered that the deceased was giving a testimony when the tragedy occurred. Efforts to revive him at the scene reportedly failed.
Until his passing, Akinyele was a Deputy Comptroller with the Nigeria Customs Service.
Guests had been invited to a reception scheduled for 2 p.m. at Noble Castle Events Centre in Igando. Vendors and planners had arrived hours earlier to prepare for what was supposed to be a grand celebration.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of d3ath had yet to be officially confirmed.
