After suffering the devastating loss of his wife and six children, Kano resident Haruna Bashir has married again
Bashir was among 1,500 couples who recently took part in a mass wedding organised by the Kano State Government, where he married Nabila Kabiru Yunusa.
His journey to the wedding followed a heartbreaking tragedy in January 2026. Bashir lost his wife, Fatima Abubakar, and their six children after attackers invaded their home in Chiranchi, Dorayi, while he was away at the market.
The tragedy left Bashir without his immediate family and struggling to cope with the loss.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf later visited him and offered a package of support aimed at helping him rebuild his life. The assistance included a promise of a new home in Amana City, welfare support, sponsorship for Hajj and Umrah, and help with finding a new wife.
Bashir accepted the government’s intervention and went on to donate his former residence for conversion into an Islamiyya school.
His remarriage was eventually made possible through the state’s mass wedding programme, which was designed to assist people facing financial difficulties with getting married, including widows.
As part of the initiative, brides received financial assistance for dowry payments, support to establish small businesses and various household items.
At the ceremony, Governor Yusuf served as the guardian for the grooms, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the brides.
