American philanthropist Melinda Gates has responded to her ex-husband Bill Gates’ remarks about their divorce, making it clear that she has moved forward from the painful split

In an interview for Elle’s 2025 Women of Impact issue, Melinda was asked about Bill’s recent statement, where he called their divorce after 27 years of marriage “the mistake he most regrets.”
“You’ve clearly Googled more than I have,” she quipped, rolling her eyes before adding, “Look, divorces are painful, and it’s not something I would wish on any family.”
Melinda, who shares three children—Jennifer, 28, Rory, 25, and Phoebe, 22—with the Microsoft co-founder, acknowledged that ending her marriage was one of the hardest yet most important decisions she has ever made.
Bill previously told The Times that his divorce was at the “top of the list” of his biggest mistakes. “There are others, but none that matter,” he admitted, adding that the process was “miserable” for both him and Melinda for at least two years.
Despite the challenges, he emphasized that they remain on good terms and frequently see each other, especially for family gatherings.
While Bill did not elaborate on the cause of their split, he previously admitted in 2021 to having an affair with an employee during their marriage.
