Mexican authorities have confirmed the de.ath of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” describing it as a major blow in the country’s intensifying battle against organised crime.

Oseguera, who led the feared Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was killed on Sunday during a security raid in Tapalpa, Jalisco state. Officials said further information about the operation would be released later.

According to the New York Times, El Mencho had long ranked among Mexico’s most ruthless and influential drug lords. Under his command, the CJNG rapidly expanded over the past decade, establishing a vast criminal network involved in drug manufacturing, trafficking, extortion and violent territorial dominance.

The cartel gained notoriety for launching direct assaults on security forces and orchestrating coordinated attacks across several states.

But within hours of the announcement of his death, unrest spread to at least five states. Witnesses reported that vehicles were torched and positioned across major highways, a common cartel strategy aimed at crippling movement and demonstrating retaliation.

In Jalisco, public transport services were halted in parts of the state, and residents were advised to stay indoors. Some of the disturbances were recorded in Guadalajara, the state capital and one of the country’s largest urban centres.

Security experts caution that while Oseguera’s elimination carries symbolic weight, it could ignite further violence as factions within the CJNG compete for control and rival groups move to claim territory.

Past operations targeting cartel kingpins have often led to splintering groups and heightened bloodshed rather than immediate calm.

The development also has international implications.

U.S. President Donald Trump has consistently pushed Mexico to escalate its crackdown on drug cartels, at times warning of possible unilateral military action if tougher measures were not implemented.
