Morocco coach 'resigns' after AFCON loss

Head coach of Morocco, Walid Regragui has reportedly resigned

His purported resignation comes barely three weeks after the Atlas Lions’ loss in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Senegal.

Football transfer expert, said on Friday that Regragui turned in his resignation.

However, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) categorically denied the purported resignation, insisting that Regragui remained in his position.

On January 18, Regragui-tutored Morocco fell 1-0 in extra-time to Senegal in the AFCON final at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Senegal secured their second AFCON title in three tournaments, with Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in the 94th minute – a powerful left-footed strike into the top right corner from inside the penalty area.

The match was marred by controversy, including a late penalty awarded to Morocco in second-half stoppage time, which prompted Senegal to briefly threaten to walk off the pitch before a VAR review allowed the game to continue.

Morocco’s Brahim Díaz missed the spot-kick, paving the way for Senegal’s extra-time victory.

The defeat ended Morocco’s hopes of claiming their first AFCON title since 1976, despite hosting the tournament and entering as favorites after their historic semi-final run at the 2022 World Cup.
