King Charles III of the United Kingdom praised Nigeria’s culture, progress, and people during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu on Thursday at Windsor Castle

The monarch, accompanied by Queen Camilla and members of his family and council, highlighted Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba proverbs while reflecting on Nigeria’s transformation. He remarked, “Nigeria hasn’t merely changed. It has arrived.”

King Charles also celebrated Nigerian contributions to British life, noting the impact of Afrobeats, Nollywood, Nigerian athletes in the Premier League, and professionals excelling in business, academia, law, science, literature, arts, and public service.

“Only last week, I was delighted to host a rather lively group of them for a ‘Jollof and Tea’ Party at St. James’s Palace. I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best: Nigerian, of course… or perhaps Ghanaian or Senegalese. Diplomatically I cannot remember!” he joked.

The king emphasized the strong ties between the two nations, describing the partnership as one of equals that enriches cultures, strengthens security, and boosts economies. He hailed Nigeria as an economic powerhouse, cultural force, and influential diplomatic voice from Africa, playing an increasingly vital role globally.

Invoking Nigerian proverbs, he added: “Rain does not fall on one roof alone,” reflecting Yoruba wisdom; “When the music changes, so does the dance,” citing Hausa; and “Knowledge is never complete, two heads are better than one,” quoting Igbo.

King Charles concluded with a toast to Nigeria, celebrating the nation’s resilience and vibrancy: “To the President and people of Nigeria – Naija No Dey Carry Last!”
