The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) has called for transparency and accountability in the implementation of the Student Loan Scheme, urging the Federal Government to appoint individuals with integrity to oversee the disbursement of loans
NANS, the apex student body, emphasized that transparency is crucial for the scheme’s success and sustainability.
In a statement issued in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday, NANS National President, Pedro Obi, commended the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration for initiating the student loan scheme but stressed the need for urgent action on the alleged deportation of Nigerian students from Teesside University in the UK for defaulting on their school fees.
NANS demanded that the Federal Government take immediate and decisive action to protect the rights and futures of students abroad.
The students’ body also called for the engagement of all relevant stakeholders in the implementation of the scheme, emphasizing that the loan, if properly implemented, would alleviate financial burdens faced by many students and their families and potentially end the mass exodus of Nigerian students seeking studies abroad.
To ensure the scheme’s success, NANS recommended:
1. Prioritizing transparency and accountability in loan disbursement
2. Appointing individuals with unquestionable integrity and competence from diverse backgrounds
3. Establishing transparent and effective monitoring mechanisms
3. Ensuring inclusivity and accessibility for all eligible students
4.Clearly defining loan eligibility and repayment terms
NANS expressed its full support for the Federal Government’s initiative and looked forward to seeing the positive impact on Nigeria’s students and educational system.
