In a shocking turn of events, Vasily Dubkov, the lawyer who represented the late Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, was arrested in Moscow on Tuesday.
The arrest comes shortly after Dubkov accompanied Navalny’s mother, Lyudmila Navalnaya, in her appeal to authorities for the return of her son’s body.
While Russian media has reported the arrest, official confirmation from the Russian authorities is yet to be provided. According to sources, Dubkov was detained for “violating public order.” His arrest raises concerns about the safety and freedom of individuals associated with opposition figures in Russia.
The latest development follows Navalny’s death on February 16 in an Arctic penal colony where he was serving a controversial 19-year sentence on charges labeled as politically motivated. Dubkov played a crucial role in the postmortem efforts as he joined Navalny’s mother in her quest to retrieve his body.
