The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has officially banned Nigerian radio and television stations from airing “Tell Your Papa,” a recently released song by veteran rapper Eedris Abdulkareem, citing a breach of broadcast decency standards

In a circular dated April 9, 2025, and signed by Susan Obi, the Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, the NBC classified the song as “Not To Be Broadcast” (NTBB) under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code. The section prohibits the transmission of any material deemed “inappropriate, offensive, or in breach of public decency.”

“The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem, currently trending on social media, as content deemed inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable nature,” the memo stated.

Although the track continues to circulate on social media and stir debate online, the NBC insists that its lyrical content violates the standards of ethical and responsible broadcasting.

The directive, titled “Restriction on Broadcasting ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem,” instructed all broadcast stations to desist from airing the track in line with their duty to maintain ethical content.

“Your cooperation and commitment to upholding responsible broadcasting standards is greatly appreciated,” the commission concluded.

Eedris Abdulkareem, known for his socially conscious and politically charged lyrics, is yet to comment on the development. However, speculation is rife that the song may have touched on sensitive social or political issues—an approach consistent with his history of controversial tracks like “Jaga Jaga.”
