Chelsea’s Carabao Cup campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat at Newcastle’s St James’ Park
Enzo Maresca’s heavily rotated lineup, featuring 11 changes from Sunday’s 2-1 win over Newcastle, struggled to cope with the hosts’ intensity.
Newcastle seized control midway through the first half, scoring two goals in three minutes. Alexander Isak capitalized on Benoit Badiashile’s errant pass, and Joe Willock’s flick-on from Isak’s cross led to Axel Disasi’s own goal.
Chelsea’s defensive woes were evident from the start, with Joelinton hitting the post in the second minute. Joao Felix posed Chelsea’s main threat, but his efforts were thwarted by Newcastle’s defense.
Newcastle dominated, with Willock, William Osula, and Sean Longstaff all coming close to adding to the scoreline. Longstaff’s would-be goal was disallowed for offside.
Chelsea now shifts focus to Premier League action, facing Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday and hosting FC Noah in the Europa Conference League next Thursday.
